Fern Glass Boyd

SOR Artistic Director Fern Glass Boyd is a founding member of the String Orchestra of the Rockies and has performed as its Principal Cellist since 1985. She is a faculty member of the University of Montana’s School of Music and appears frequently as soloist, chamber musician and orchestral player throughout Montana and the region. Fern has taught cello and coached chamber music throughout her career. Many of her students have gone on to have successful teaching and performing careers of their own. She has also taught successfully in the classroom teaching courses across the curriculum in the areas of Music Education, String Pedagogy, and General Education. She has been elected and served in all positions, including president, of the Executive Board of the Montana chapter of ASTA and also belongs to several other professional music organizations. A native of Philadelphia, she began her musical training at age five at the Settlement Music School, the largest community music school in the United States. She went on to earn her undergraduate degree at the Eastman School of Music and completed her graduate studies at Yale University, where she served as cellist of the graduate string quartet-in-residence. Fern’s voice can be heard regularly on Montana Public Radio as a representative of the SOR and as a passionate advocate of the arts.
