Fern Glass Boyd

Fern Glass Boyd is a founding member of the String Orchestra of the Rockies and has performed as its Principal cellist since the Orchestra’s beginnings in 1985. For the past ten years, she also served as the SOR’s chief artistic authority, overseeing its many musical activities as Artistic Director. Fern is a native of Philadelphia and received her music degrees from the Eastman School of Music and Yale University. Her 39-year teaching and performing career was spent as a faculty member at the University of Montana in Missoula until her retirement this year. Recent performance highlights include appearances at the Tucson Cello Congress in Arizona as soloist and guest artist, The Big Sky Music Festival in Montana as a member of its Festival Orchestra, and with the SOR this past spring in Seattle, WA on the University of Washington’s Chamber Music Series. Fern performs on a beautiful cello made in 1811 by Joseph Hill of London, England.
