From Maria Larionoff, Artistic Director

Dear Friends,

All of us in the SOR family would like to thank you for your continued support during these unprecedented and extraordinary times. Although we can’t be with you at this time, we would like to continue to share some of our favorite performances from past SOR concerts and keep the music playing in our hearts and minds. Our February 2020 concert,  A Portrait of Beethoven is our first featured ArmchairConcert and includes the nostalgic, lilting Serenade of Sir Edward Elgar, written in 1892; the evocative String Quartet #2 of Philip Glass, composed in 1983 and arranged by the composer for string orchestra, and concludes with the power and drama of Beethoven’s Op.18 #4 String Quartet, arranged for orchestra by B. Lieberman—a masterpiece that perfectly mirrors our turbulent times!

Stay healthy!… Yours in Music,

 Artistic Director, SOR

Dear Friends and Music Lovers,

September 2019 marks the start of the 35th season of spectacular string playing by the String Orchestra of the Rockies! We are all very excited to share both our incredible music with you and to unveil our newly updated SOR website, created in collaboration with our talented webmaster, Michael Wilder.

Our concert season features some phenomenal soloists including Romanian double bass virtuoso Catalin Rotaru and the brilliant, award-winning American violinist Stephanie Chase. Missoula’s own Maria Lambros, now a world-renowned musical star, will return for a long-anticipated solo appearance with us as well, and UM Professor Adam Collins will be featured as a guest lecturer discussing Beethoven’s life and work on our February program.

In addition to information on our upcoming season, we have some new features on our website that we would like to share with you. We have a musician’s newsletter, Behind the ScORe, which will be regularly updated with musical and personal news about our busy and talented SOR players and soloists and will include discussions on various topics related to our rehearsals and concerts. You can get to know our hard-working Board members and our extraordinary Orchestra Coordinator Dari Quirk who works behind the scenes all year to make our concerts happen. Read about our talented 2019/20 SOR scholarship recipient, Taylor Curry, and learn more about our youth involvement and educational outreach on our Next Gen page. If you have young musicians in your family, this is an excellent way to find out how they can get involved with SOR.

As always, I welcome your backstage visits after our concerts, and I appreciate meeting all of you and hearing you share your thoughts about your SOR concert experience. Please enjoy exploring our new website and learning about your SOR players, and I look forward to seeing you throughout the concert season!

Yours in Music,
