SOR Concert February 4, 2024 / UM Music Recital Hall – 4:00 pm

Ludwig van Beethoven’s magnificent Grosse Fuge has been described as “an absolutely contemporary piece that will be contemporary forever” (Igor Stravinsky). Written in 1825, when Beethoven was almost completely deaf, this groundbreaking work was vehemently condemned by music critics at its first performance but is now regarded as one of Beethoven’s most significant compositions. The tremendous impact of this single-movement work is both physically and emotionally apocalyptic in its depiction of the universal struggles of humanity. The musicians of SOR take center stage to tackle the fiendishly difficult work, and the program also features two beloved works of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart—his exuberant and youthful Symphony no. 29 and his Divertimento in D Major, both favorites of our SOR musicians. We hope you can join us for an afternoon of masterpieces from two of the all-time greats in classical music!
